Among Shia Muslim presence in Turkey there is a small but considerable minority of Muslims with Ismaili heritage and affiliation. Most Muslims in Turkey are Sunnis forming about 80.5%, and Shia-Aleviler (Alevis, Ja’faris, Alawites) denominations in total form about 16.5% of the Muslim population. The remainder 10% are Shia, who are concentrated in the Emirates of Dubai and Sharjah. Is Dubai Shia or Sunni?ĩ0% of the Emirati population are Sunni Muslims. The mut’ah is particularly popular on university campuses and, according to Omar Farooq Khan, president of the Ahlul Bayt Islamic Society at Bradford University, the practice is on the increase among Shia students. The mut’ah is practised by Shia Muslims while Sunni Muslims generally consider it haram – forbidden. The divide originated with a dispute over who should succeed the Prophet Muhammad as leader of the Islamic faith he introduced. Though the two main sects within Islam, Sunni and Shia, agree on most of the fundamental beliefs and practices of Islam, a bitter split between the two goes back some 14 centuries. Embargoes were also used in 1603, when the rise of Safavid power in the East once again became a worrisome threat, but the embargoes were not as successful as those embraced by Selim I. The Ottomans used trade embargoes consistently against the Safavid Empire as a way to assert dominance over their Eastern rival. Sunnis believed that Muhammad’s successor should be Abu Bakr and Omar, and the Shias believed that his successor should be Ali.
How Shia differs from Sunni?Īfter the death of Prophet Muhammad, Muslims had a disagreement. Additionally, Sunni clerics had tremendous influence over government and their authority was central to the regulation of the economy.
The Sultan was to be a devout Muslim and was given the literal authority of the Caliph. Sunni Islam was the official religion of the Ottoman Empire.
